News this week about Harry Ramsdens in Guiseley closing is a travesty. The site is the original location of where Harry Ramsden himself fried fish & chips from a wooden hut. Since then, a sizeable restaurant and takeaway was built and was very successful for many years. Since new owners have taken over, the corporate ideals have taken over from the traditional business that Guiseley was once proud to have. The old saying, "businesses are people" is very true and can be demonstrated in this instance. Only a few miles down the road, Murgatroyds Fish & Chips restaurant & takeaway is as busy as ever, queues stretch round the building for hungry customers waiting to eat. Similarly, Webster Fish & Chips in Baildon provide a fantastic product with an excellent service and it is rare to see the restaurant or takeaway anything but full.

Perhaps Harry Ramsdens need to employ some caring fish fryers and less people in suits, perhaps the business can then return to the popular institution that it once was.

Government to boost business loans with £40 billion in lending

According to George Osbourne, the Government is ready to underwrite up to £40 billion in lending to cash-strapped businesses in an attempt to kick-start Britain's flagging businesses (see today's Independent)

This is great news and even better that the Government appreciate that small businesses are an integral part of the economy.

According to the Telegraph, they say he said that he would use "every tool at our disposal" to get the economy going again, without jeopardising the UK's triple A credit rating

Whilst here at Ernest Wilsons, we are still seeing plenty of businesses selling, the lending market is a big part of getting the selling market moving as there are plenty of people who want to buy or start a business, however funding can be an issue and despite the banks promises to loosen their belts, we have seen little evidence of this.

Well the last 3 days have been very hectic at the Great Yorkshire Show, Harrogate. We had our stand in the usual place, opposite the England Rugby Union Store. The footfall was fantastic with many visitors stopping to have a chat about both buying and selling a business. On the Wednesday, Prince Charles & Camilla were in attendance and I saw them both watching the Show Jumping and also on the balcony of the hospitality suite.
Looking at the number of visitors, there can be no complaint that this was the best attended show so far.
There were many well known brands displaying and I managed to have a quick chat with the girls on the Yorkshire Post stand who seemed to be doing brisk business.
